HYRO is a joint venture between two of the UK’s leading renewable energy companies, RES and Octopus Energy Generation. We are working with industrial businesses in the UK to develop, produce and supply green hydrogen, making the most of renewable energy
The UK government recently awarded HYRO one of the first subsidy contracts through the Hydrogen Allocation Round 1. Our first project will be working with Kimberly-Clark to flush away fossil fuels when manufacturing Andrex and Kleenex.

What is green hydrogen?
Green hydrogen is created when an electrolyser powered by clean electricity like wind and solar splits water into hydrogen and oxygen. It’s green because it’s made using renewable energy. This is the type of hydrogen that HYRO is producing.
Hydrogen can also be made with polluting fossil fuels like natural gas, but as this is not made with a clean renewable source, it emits carbon emissions into the atmosphere and is referred to as “grey” hydrogen.
HYRO supplies hydrogen for use in industrial processes that currently use grey hydrogen or where electrification is challenging. An example of this is replacing grey hydrogen with green hydrogen in the production of fertiliser.

HYRO is a joint venture between RES and Octopus Energy Generation, combining decades of renewables development and investment experience, with deep expertise in supplying green electricity to industrial customers.
Together we’re aiming to develop 700MW of green hydrogen electrolyser capacity by 2030 and unleash £3bn of investment to make this happen.
RES is the world’s largest independent renewable energy developer – to having delivered 23GW of renewable energy generation across 11 countries.
Octopus Energy Generation manages over 3.2 GW of green energy assets worth £6bn across over 15 countries. It’s the generation arm of Octopus Energy Group, the global energy tech pioneer, using technology to unlock a customer focused and affordable green energy revolution.
Two funds managed by Octopus Energy Generation have invested in HYRO. These include the listed investment trust Octopus Renewables Infrastructure Trust (ORIT) as well as the private renewables fund, the Sky Fund (ORI SCSp).
