Scaling the PRODUCTION of E‑fuels and hydrogen

Key to achieving the energy transition

HYRO produces e-fuels and hydrogen to decarbonise sectors which cannot be electrified. Aviation, shipping, chemicals, and heavy industry need low-carbon fuels and feedstocks to reach net zero.

E-fuels and green hydrogen provide a credible pathway for these sectors. HYRO develops hydrogen, e-methanol, and e-SAF projects at scale in the UK.

Backed by Octopus Energy Generation

HYRO is an Octopus Energy Generation company. Our projects are backed by one of Europe’s largest renewable energy investors, with a global portfolio of £8 billion AUM. We have the institutional credibility and access to development capital that complex infrastructure projects require.

We have been shortlisted in the UK Government’s Hydrogen Allocation Round 1 (HAR1) and Round 2 (HAR2). Project Northfleet is one of the first HAR1 projects to begin construction and remains on track to meet its expected Commercial Operation Date.

How we work

Green hydrogen production

We develop electrolytic hydrogen production facilities, from renewable power sourcing to grid connection and planning, producing hydrogen for hard-to-electrify sectors in the UK.

Hard-to-electrify use cases include industrial applications that need high heat or high energy density, off-grid clean power, or hydrogen as a chemical feedstock.

E-fuels

We develop e-methanol and e-SAF facilities in the UK, including CO2 sourcing and hydrogen production.

We combine green hydrogen with CO₂ in a synthesis reactor to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel and e-methanol for industries that need a direct or drop-in replacement for fossil fuels.

E-fuels use cases include aviation, shipping, and chemical and industrial processes.

Project development

From project origination to Final Investment Decision, we manage the full development lifecycle — including subsidy applications, offtake agreements, local, regional, and central government engagement, and upstream suppliers.

Decarbonising hard-to-electrify sectors

HYRO focuses exclusively on hard-to-abate sectors — industries where direct electrification is not technically or commercially viable: aviation, maritime shipping, chemicals, and industrial applications that need high-heat, high energy density, off-grid clean power, or hydrogen as a chemical feedstock.

As well as being viable decarbonisation options, e-fuels and hydrogen can reduce power curtailment and energy transition costs by using existing infrastructure and supply chains.
