PROJECT NORTHFLEET

Project Northfleet was developed by HYRO and will be taken through construction and operation by Octopus Energy Generation and HYRO.

Producing hydrogen at scale in the UK

Project Northfleet is one of the first UK green hydrogen projects to have reached financial close under the UK Government’s Hydrogen Allocation Round 1 and remains on track to reach its Commercial Operation Date. It is HYRO’s proof of delivery.

Project overview

Project Northfleet is a green hydrogen production facility developed by HYRO and backed by Octopus Energy Generation. It was successful under HAR1 and will receive Hydrogen Production Business Model (HPBM) support, bridging the cost gap between hydrogen and natural gas.

The project’s 12MW electrolyser produces over 3 tonnes of green hydrogen per day to decarbonise Kimberly-Clark’s paper mill in Northfleet. Paper manufacturing uses high temperature heating processes which can’t easily be electrified.

How the project was developed

Northfleet progressed through HYRO’s phase gate development process from project concept to FID. HYRO collaborated with Kimberly-Clark throughout the project to ensure the project can meet the paper mill’s operational requirements and enable a full switch to hydrogen power. HYRO’s offtaker-first approach to HAR1 contributed to the project’s success.

HAR1 and the Hydrogen Production Business Model

The UK Hydrogen Production Business Model (HPBM) is a UK Government revenue support mechanism that bridges the cost gap between green hydrogen and natural gas. Delivered through competitive Hydrogen Allocation Rounds, it provides producers with a subsidy equal to the difference between an agreed strike price and the reference gas price, providing the revenue certainty required for investment.

Project Northfleet received a HPBM agreement under HAR1.
