How it works

Renewable power

Time-matched renewable electricity is procured to produce hydrogen. HYRO delivers power supply contracts and power price optimisation using in-house tool Hydra.

Green hydrogen

Powered by renewable electricity, water is split into hydrogen and oxygen in an electrolyser. HYRO secures relevant development rights, develops electrolyser facility, and optimises production and storage strategy using Hydra.

Hydrogen end-uses

Hydrogen used for industrial applications that need high-heat, high energy density, off-grid clean power, or hydrogen as a chemical feedstock.

CO2 sourcing for e-fuels

Sustainable biogenic CO2 is captured from industrial facilities such as biogas production, biomass combined heat and power plants, or energy-from-waste plants. HYRO secures exclusive rights to CO2 supply and manages interface of CO2 supply to the e-fuels plant.

E-fuels

CO2 is combined with green hydrogen to produce e-fuels – renewable liquid fuels. HYRO develops the e-fuel production facility.

Shipping

E-methanol is one of the leading replacement fuels for shipping, enabling the decarbonisation of global shipping routes.

Chemicals

Green hydrogen is used to displace grey hydrogen as a feedstock in industrial processes such as hydrocracking, hydrogenation, and ammonia synthesis. E-methanol is used to substitute fossil-based e-methanol to produce low-carbon olefins, formaldehyde resins, DME and other platform chemicals, and plastics.

  • What is green hydrogen production?

    Green hydrogen production is the process of generating hydrogen through electrolysis using renewable electricity and water. An electrolyser splits water (H₂O) into hydrogen and oxygen. Because the electricity source is renewable, no CO₂ is emitted during production. The resulting hydrogen is a zero-carbon energy carrier used as a chemical feedstock, energy source, or converted into e-fuels.

  • What are e-fuels?

    E-fuels are produced by combining green hydrogen with captured CO₂ in a synthesis reactor. They are “drop-in” fuels which can be directly substituted for their fossil counterparts. Example e-fuels include e-SAF, e-methanol, and e-diesel. E-fuels must comply with sustainability requirements to ensure they are low-carbon and recyclable.

  • What is e-Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and how does HYRO produce it?

    Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a low-carbon drop-in aviation fuel produced from non-fossil feedstocks. HYRO develops power-to-liquid (PtL) SAF facilities — also known as e-SAF or e-kerosene — where green hydrogen is combined with captured CO₂ in a synthesis reactor to produce a synthetic aviation fuel. The UK Government’s SAF Mandate, active from January 2025, requires aviation fuel suppliers to meet increasing SAF blend obligations.

  • What is e-methanol and how does HYRO produce it?

    E-methanol is one of the leading low-carbon fuels for global shipping, produced from green hydrogen and captured CO₂. As a drop-in shipping fuel, e-methanol allows the use of existing port infrastructure. Global shipping companies are launching dual-fuel ships which can run on e-methanol and fossil fuels. The UK’s Maritime Decarbonisation Strategy and the EU’s FuelEUMaritime Regulation incentivise the use of e-methanol in shipping.

    Methanol is not only a fuel but a platform molecule that can be used to make e-SAF via methanol-to-jet, plastics, other fuel blends with gasoline and diesel and other chemicals like polyester, formaldehyde, silicones, etc.

  • What are hard-to-abate sectors and why do green hydrogen e-fuels matter to them?

    Hard-to-abate sectors are industries, including aviation, maritime shipping and chemicals, where direct electrification is not technically or commercially viable. These sectors require low-carbon liquid or gaseous fuels to decarbonise. E-fuels derived from green hydrogen and carbon dioxide, such as SAF and e-methanol, provide credible decarbonisation pathways for these industries.

  • What is Project Northfleet?

    Project Northfleet is HYRO’s flagship green hydrogen production project in the United Kingdom. It is one of the first projects shortlisted under the UK Government’s Hydrogen Allocation Round 1 (HAR1) to have taken Final Investment Decision and remains on track to reach its expected Commercial Operation Date (COD) under the Hydrogen Production Business Model (HPBM).

  • What is the UK Hydrogen Production Business Model (HPBM)?

    The UK Hydrogen Production Business Model (HPBM) is a UK Government revenue support mechanism for green hydrogen producers, administered through the Hydrogen Allocation Rounds (HAR). It bridges the cost gap between green hydrogen and natural gas by paying producers a subsidy equal to the difference between an agreed strike price and a reference price linked to the price of natural gas. HYRO has successfully navigated HPBM for two projects under HAR1 and HAR2.

  • What is the UK SAF RCM?

    The UK SAF Revenue Certainty Mechanism is a UK Government revenue support mechanism for SAF producers. Similarly to the Hydrogen Allocation Rounds, the SAF RCM bridges the cost between an agreed strike price and a reference price linked to the non-HEFA SAF market price. The SAF RCM is expected to help e-SAF project reach final investment decisions in the UK. HYRO is developing projects for submission into the SAF RCM.
