Off-grid power. Zero tailpipe emissions.

There are an estimated 1 million off-grid power generators in the UK, the vast majority diesel fuelled, emitting more than 1 MtCO2e annually. Generators are used across the construction sector, as backup power for critical infrastructure (hospitals, data centres, airports), at temporary sites (TV/film sets, events, music festivals), and even for grid balancing.

UK businesses are developing world-leading hydrogen mobile power units which can replace diesel generators with zero tailpipe emissions.

The off-grid power problem

Off-grid power is used where grid electricity is not readily available. Construction sites, remote locations, temporary events and critical infrastructure need guaranteed backup supply in case of grid outages and currently rely on diesel generators. The use of batteries is limited due to their lower energy density, with certain sites requiring 24/7 operation and/or large volumes of power.

Why hydrogen fuel cells work for off-grid power

Hydrogen fuel cells (hydrogen power units) generate electricity through an electrochemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, with only water released at the tailpipe. Hydrogen is sufficiently energy dense to replace diesel in mobile power applications, with no direct CO₂ or particulate emissions.

Hydrogen fuel cell technology for off-grid applications is proven and commercially available, with UK industry designing and manufacturing hydrogen power units at a commercial scale.
