Displacing grey hydrogen and other fossil fuels
HYRO produces green hydrogen to displace grey hydrogen as a feedstock in industrial processes and to displace other fossil fuels when electrification is not commercially or technically viable.
HYRO’s e-methanol can be used to produce low-carbon chemicals, plastics, and fabrics by replacing fossil-based methanol.
Why industry is hard to decarbonise
Chemical production and industrial processes rely on fossil fuels as chemical feedstocks and as an energy source to generate heat and steam. HYRO supports electrifying these processes where technically and commercially possible.
Hydrogen/e-fuels are required to decarbonise processes which use grey hydrogen, naphtha, methanol, and other fossil fuels as chemical feedstocks. Other process applications require a certain quality of high-temperature heat and steam which current electrification technology cannot deliver.
E-fuels and green hydrogen can directly replace their fossil-based counterparts – decarbonising industrial processes using fuels produced in the UK.
How green hydrogen helps industry decarbonise
Industry runs on fossil-based hydrogen
Grey hydrogen, produced from natural gas, is widely used in industrial processes including hydrocracking in refining, hydrogenation in food and chemical production, and ammonia synthesis for fertiliser production. Green hydrogen is chemically identical to grey hydrogen and can be directly substituted in these processes.
E-methanol as a chemical feedstock
E-methanol produced from green hydrogen and renewable CO₂ can substitute fossil-based methanol feedstock to produce olefins, formaldehyde resins, DME and other platform chemicals, even plastics. This offers chemical producers a route to reduce emissions while maintaining existing process infrastructure.
