What we do
One of the most trusted and credible e-fuel and green hydrogen developers in the UK
Developing a green hydrogen or e-fuels facility in the UK is a complex, multi-year undertaking. With successes in HAR1 and HAR2, HYRO brings the UK-specific expertise required to develop a successful project. HYRO follows strict project development governance to ensure only bankable projects are progressed. We commercially optimise our projects using HYRO’s in-house proprietary software Hydra.
We are your local development partner for high-value e-fuel and green hydrogen projects that decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors in the UK.
We develop projects that get built
HYRO follows a structured phase-gate development process. Each stage has defined deliverables and decision points before the project advances. This discipline ensures HYRO only develops projects with credible delivery pathways and that our projects align with our partners’ and investors’ needs throughout the development process.
A core part of HYRO’s project development strategy is our “Offtaker-first” approach. Many e-fuel and hydrogen projects across the world have failed in various stages of development due to lack of offtake. By ensuring offtakers with viable end consumers are committed to the project from the origination phase, HYRO mitigates the fundamental offtake revenue and volume risk to our projects.
HYRO leads on development through to and including FEED. Where projects proceed to construction, HYRO remains involved in a development and institutional memory capacity.

Working with Octopus Energy Generation
Owned by funds managed by Octopus Energy Generation.
HYRO is owned by Octopus Energy Generation, a company that is investing in, building and managing renewable energy projects across the world. Octopus Energy Generation is one of Europe’s largest renewable energy investors, managing over 4.4GW of renewable energy assets worldwide valued at £8 billion.
Support from Octopus Energy Generation is key to HYRO’s success as a project developer:
How Octopus Energy Generation backs our projects
Access to development capital: owned by Octopus Energy Generation funds with appetite for investment in project development and construction
Ensures projects are aligned with investor requirements: HYRO develops projects to fit Octopus Energy Generation requirements – enabling projects to reach FID
Institutional credibility and investor expertise in renewable projects (including new and innovative sectors)
Support from in-house departments: Energy Markets, Data Science, ESG, Asset Management
UK-focused expertise
HYRO is focused on developing projects in the UK, with a team of UK-based technical and commercial project managers, supported by Octopus Energy Generation’s wider expertise in UK markets.
UK-focused expertise is key to the successful delivery of its UK-based workstreams:
HYRO’s UK-based workstreams
- Site identification and land procurement
- Grid connection — securing sufficient grid capacity for large-scale electrolysis
- Renewable power sourcing — PPA structuring with onsite or nearby renewable generators
- Water supply and utilities integration
- Planning and permitting for hydrogen production facilities
- UK Government subsidy applications under the Hydrogen Production Business Model (HPBM)
- Stakeholder engagement and ongoing management at all levels of government – local, regional and central.
Hydra – HYRO’s in-house commercial optimisation tool
Hydra is HYRO’s software platform for commercial optimisation of e-fuel and hydrogen production facilities.
Hydra minimises the overall cost of production by preventing the over-sizing of production facilities, power procurement, and storage facilities. It also optimises operational and stack replacement strategies. This optimisation is achieved by simulating a wide range of designs within set constraints and using a genetic algorithm to select “winning” designs.
The software was used to support commercial optimisation of HYRO’s HAR1 facility, including the plant’s power procurement and stack replacement strategy.
